Why Am I Writing This?
It is surprising to tell you that this is my first post on this site – DearDestination. I am writing this post because I know there are lots of people like me and you are thinking to build their travel blog or struggling with it.
The other but most important reason is – because I want to share my every step which I will take to start my travel journey, whether it will be happy or sad, I will write every experience here. Creating a travel blog is my first step and now I am writing about it.
Becoming a Travel Blogger is Easy?
Absolutely, No. The only way to become a successful travel blogger is hard work, consistency and your interest.
The best way to stay charge is to read your favorite travel blogger’s stories, experience, and tips shared by them. I like to read Mathew Karston, Shivya Nath, and other travel bloggers to get some inspiration from them.
GhupShup Over…Let’s Start Creating Travel Blog
After a little bit of chitchat, let’s start the main section of this post which how to start a travel blog – step by step guide. I will not confuse you with too many tools available in the market, I will only mention some highly recommended, reputable and out of the box tools and services which can help your travel site to grow.
Select a Name for Travel Blog
When we think about building a site, the first thing comes to mind is the niche of the website and most important name.
Here niche is clear – which is Travel but you need to choose an excellent name for it. Don’t overthink over it, It is the most confusing and time taking situation for me to decide a name for a website.
How to choose a travel blog name?
Always remember, your blog name should be easy, short and memorable. Consider mine – DearDestination, easy to remember, short and tells about traveling.
You can choose a name whatever you like but a niche related name is a good SEO practice. You can mix the words, prefix and suffix some words to get your name because getting name available in present time is very tough.
I have checked some name which is available and best for travel niche blog. Register anyone which you like and don’t forget to tell me. Check the below paragraph for the available names.
Choose Right Domain + Hosting Provider
You need to always choose a right domain and hosting provider company because it is one of the pillars of a website.
Hosting is your online place where you put your hard work in the form of files, data etc and Domain is its address where you can view and access your data. Therefore its security, privacy, uptime etc are the most important aspects and only a good hosting provider can provide these things easily. So don’t compromise for an amount. It is worth to pay a little bit more in comparison to a bad provider which often cause a headache.
I will recommend Bluehost as it is the best hosting provider and trusted by millions. Bluehost also offers the great discount to their new customer and a free domain name with each plan. Currently offering their basic plan only for $2.65/month on their Birthday Sale on July 16 & 17. Keep in mind that going with the long-term plan like 3 – 5 years will save you some decent amount.
Because it is an industry based hosting provider and trusted by millions. It provides a free domain, spam protection, daily backups, uptime monitoring, priority support, hack-proof security and many more tools to optimize the site.
A Free Domain Name + Trusted Hosting + Lowest Price –> Get Bluehost at $3.95/month only
Trusted by Millions, Best Hosting Provider
Domain name – .com, .org, .co.uk or something else?
You should go with .com because it is the most common and recognizable extension for domain names. You can also go with any other extension according to your choice.
Check out some name suggestion for a travel blog as I mentioned earlier in this post.
myroadtravel.com — Get with Bluehost
girlontheway.com — Get with Bluehost
waytrip.com — Get with Bluehost
tour-girl.com — Get with Bluehost
luxarytourgirl.com — Get with Bluehost
tourteen.com — Get with Bluehost
nomadictravel.org — Get with Bluehost
Instead of these names, I will add more names time to time. Don’t forget to tell me if you register a name from this list. It will encourage me to write more post and help me to update the list regularly.
Time to Install WordPress Framework
WordPress is mostly used web development framework and over 31% of all website across the web are using it. It is completely free and open source framework. It has some excellent feature such as changing the whole site design or adding and removing features within minutes, creating and restoring backup automatically, security, speed, and SEO optimized framework etc.
Don’t confuse between wordpress.com and wordpress.org. Both are different service offered by Automattic. wordpress.com is paid service and has some limitation if you want to earn money form your blog.
I will recommend you to go with self-hosted wordpress.org. It is free and has no limitation over revenue generation. You can use it as per your requirements. Don’t download wordpress zip file from wordpress.org site. I will tell you how to install wordpress easily in the next paragraph.
How to Install WordPress? Read Here…
Installing wordpress is very easy. Just log in to your newly purchased hosting account and find Softaculous App Installer.
Click on the wordpress icon and fill the instruction as shown in the image below. You will be asked to fill domain name, blog name, tagline, username, password, email id, and some advanced setting.
Select HTTPS over HTTP, keep blank the wp directory field if you want to install wordpress on your main domain (not any subdirectories like www.yourdomain.com/travelblog or something else), Select a strong username and password, change the wp default table name and prefix etc.
In advanced options, you can enable or disable some features like auto upgrades wordpress, auto upgrade wordpress plugin and themes, backup location, etc.
For auto upgrade wordpress plugin, you can also enable this option from wordpress Jetpack dashboard which is very convenient. For wordpress themes, premium themes give the option to enable or disable updates.
Keep these enable to get latest updates of the themes and plugin for better performance and security.
At the end of the installation page, you will be asked to select a theme. This is optional and you can install your desired theme later.
Hit the Install Button and now you will see a successful message of Installation. You will also see two links, one for the frontend of your site and the other for admin dashboard where you can do the rest of work on the site and compose the posts as well.
Install Premium WordPress Theme
Now, you have to design your blog as per your need. Navigate Admin Dashboard > Appearance > Themes. WordPress has a huge repository for wordpress themes both free and paid. Free themes come with some limitation and often poor support.
I will suggest premium themes because they provide advanced features, completely drag and drop page builder, and priority support.
With premium themes, you will also able to unlock lots of other plugins and tools like sharing, SEO, Security etc.
Difference Between Free & Premium Themes
- Free themes come with limited features while premium themes come with tons of advanced features.
- Free themes don’t provide regular and quick support and you have to wait for some time or few days for getting a response or you have to hire a developer while with premium themes you will get priority support.
- Sometimes free themes not good for security and SEO while with premium themes, you will always get the guarantee about these things.
- Free themes downloaded many times, therefore, its design is not unique while premium themes offer the unique design.
except for these things, there are lots of factors that matter to choose a premium theme instead of a free wordpress theme.
Elegant Themes – Best Premium WordPress Theme at affordable Price
I will recommend Divi by Elegant Theme which is the best theme and offers completely drag and drop site design. Secure and Speed optimized wordpress themes comes with powerful features.
With ElegantTheme you will unlock useful plugin such as Bloom opt-in, Social Sharing, page builder etc.
Follow this link to know more about – Elegant Themes and Its Pricing.
A premium theme will cost you around $50 – $100 but it is worth for your hard work. If you will hire a web developer it will cost you around $300 – $700.
Install Some Useful Plugin
After Installing theme, you need to enable some useful features so that your site perform better in Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs). It is like plug and play.
You can install and activate a plugin by navigation wordpress admin dashboard > Plugin > Add Plugin. Here you can search from thousands of plugin available free.
Here I mentioned some necessary plugin which a wordpress site must have in their plugin list.
- SEO – Yoast SEO WordPress Plugin
- For Cache – Go with WP-Rocket if you have budget otherwise go with Hummingbird Page Speed Optimization by WPMUDEV (available free in wordpress repository, also comes with Pro features)
- Security and Malware Protection – Sucuri Security

- Jetpack – A bundle of wordpress features

It’s time to tell others that you are ready to fly. Navigate Dashboard > Posts > Add New Post and write your first post using the wordpress editor and hit the publish button.
I will tell you what is the right strategy to write a high-quality travel blog post in my future post.
